Searching for a 'Want'

"Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer."
Romans 12:12 (NIV)

Vast. The word hung in my mind, quietly reverberating. Why?

I had been pouring out my disappointment to God over our fruitless search for a house. For months Carol and I had been living with our daughter Kristal in New York State, hoping to buy a home nearby. We looked at more than seventy houses, but none fit what we were looking for.

When we decided to make an offer on one, Kristal and her sister Laurel joined us in a prayer circle, asking God to confirm it by letting our offer be accepted. But next day we learned there had been a higher offer. Disappointed, we continued house hunting.

Yet I couldn’t forget that house, a well-maintained four-bedroom Cape Cod that would let Laurel and our granddaughter Kaila have the upstairs to themselves. “Father,” I prayed, “if that house is really for us, let it come back on the market.” For weeks afterward I kept checking the listings. But it wasn’t there.

That’s when that surprising word popped into my mind: vast.

Yes, God, I thought, You are vast. Your creation is vast. Your riches are vast. Vast beyond all human comprehension.

I kept checking the listings. Then bingo! The Cape Cod was back on the market; the first sale had fallen through. Excited, we made our offer and within days agreed with the sellers on a price. It is now our new home.

God had supplied what we needed, once again demonstrating that His riches are vast, and they are always available to those who seek Him.

Father, I wish I had a heart of thanks as vast as Your riches.
